Why do I need an appraisal?
Insurance companies frequently require appraisals to insure valuable objects. An outside expert’s opinion has much weight when claims of damage or loss are made. When donating artwork, appraisals are necessary for the purpose of accurate tax deductions and evidence in the event of an audit. Many nonprofits that accept art donations also require an appraisal for their own records.
You may also need an appraisal to know how much you should receive in the resale of a work of art, and it can be used to your advantage in consignment negotiations. Lawyers may request appraisals in division-of-property cases, as might the IRS for estate tax purposes.
Appraisal options
1. Basic Assessment — $100
An email assessment and appraisal with a brief history of the item when possible. This assessment costs $100 and is suitable for most items.
2. Signed & Sealed Written Appraisal — $150
A signed and sealed written appraisal that includes all relevant information, suitable for any purpose that requires physical documentation — including insurance and estate purposes. $150.
3. Extensive Written Appraisal — starting at $250
An extensive written assessment and appraisal with reference and documentation. Suitable for determining resale value, defined as the “fair market value for purposes of resale.” This evaluation identifies the wholesale value of the artwork — essentially what you might expect to sell the piece for. This does not guarantee the piece will sell for that amount in any given period of time, nor that the piece will be saleable at all. Starts at $250.
How to get started
Please send photos of your items front and back, as well as any signatures and emboss marks. Include the dimensions and any relevant paperwork, and let us know which type of appraisal you would like. After the invoice is paid, most simple appraisals are completed within a few hours; larger-scale assessments are mailed within a few days.
